Metabee

·2 mins

After binge watch Medabots, I decide to draw the yellow beetle aka Metabee in krita.

Metabee

Below I will explain my creative proccess.

First I play with silhouette because the shape will break or make my final image.

WIP 1

Once I find a great silhouette, I start my rough sketch of the drawing. I create a new layer on top of my silhouette and lower my silhouette opacity to become around 5-20 %

WIP 2

Then after that I create a thin line art on top of my rough sketch. I lower the opacity of my rough sketch and disable blue channel of rough sketch layer. In krita you can disable it in layer properties. Always mirror your canvas by pressing “m” shortcut in Krita. You might find an anomaly in your perspective.

WIP 3

After that I fill the image with color using Gmic-Qt filter. For tutorial in fill in your color, you can look David Revoy tutorial.

WIP 4

Next I create a group and put my flatten color layer into it. After that I create a new layer on top of it with “Inherit Alpha” on and blend to “Multiply”. This will create a shadow layer in my image.

WIP 5

Once the shadow is done, I create a new layer on top of my shadow layer with “Inherit Alpha” on and blend to “Soft Light”. This layer is for hightlight. Do not go crazy with highlight just give it to the specific part you want your viewer to see.

WIP 6

After that I add a shadow on the ground and create a reflection color a little bit.

Final

This piece is fully inspired by Arne Niklas Jansson workflow. He is an underrated artist. Go check his website and his tutorial: 1, 2.
